Most pages about tattoo prices in Bali avoid the question. You get "it depends," a contact form, and no number. So here it is first, before the explanation: at Samadhi the minimum for any tattoo is 1,500,000 IDR (about 90 USD). Work is priced by the hour: 1,500,000 IDR per hour with our resident artists and 2,500,000 IDR per hour with our top artist. Large projects use a fixed full-day rate (8 hours): 10,000,000 IDR with a resident artist, 20,000,000 IDR with our top artist. A full sleeve usually takes 7–10 full days.
Now the part that actually matters — what those numbers are attached to, why nobody can quote your specific tattoo before designing it, and why the cheapest option on a tourist strip usually costs more in the long run.
How Pricing Works: Hourly, With a Fixed Full-Day Rate
We charge by the hour, not from a menu. The rate depends on the artist: 1,500,000 IDR per hour with a resident artist, 2,500,000 IDR per hour with our top artist.
A fixed menu price forces the artist to fit your tattoo into a predetermined time box, whether or not your idea belongs there. An hourly rate simply reflects the time your design actually needs.
For large projects that need whole days of work, there is a fixed rate for a full workday of 8 hours: 10,000,000 IDR with a resident artist, 20,000,000 IDR with our top artist. The day is booked for you, so nobody is watching the clock or trying to squeeze in a second client after you.
This is also why no honest studio can give you a real number before the design exists. Anyone quoting a big piece instantly is guessing, and a guess is either padded in their favour or will be revised upward later.
What Actually Moves the Price
Five things, roughly in order of impact:
- Total working time. This is the real driver. Everything below is just a way of predicting it.
- Detail density, not size. A palm-sized hyper-detailed portrait can take longer than a much larger piece with open composition. Two tattoos of identical dimensions can differ by hours.
- Placement. Ribs, sternum, inner arm, knee and foot are slower to work on — the skin behaves differently, and sessions need more breaks. Flat, forgiving areas like the outer arm or calf move faster.
- Style. Photorealism and micro-realism demand the most time per square centimetre. Fine line covers ground faster but leaves zero margin for correction.
- Whether it's fresh skin. Covering or reworking existing ink adds constraints, and usually cost — more on that below.
Large Projects: Why a Sleeve Is Quoted in Workdays
A full sleeve usually takes 7–10 full days, depending entirely on the complexity of the final design; a full back or leg can take more. Each full day is billed at the fixed rate — 10,000,000 IDR with a resident artist, 20,000,000 IDR with our top artist — so the final figure depends on the number of days.
That number tends to surprise people in both directions. If you've priced comparable large-scale realism in Australia, the UK or the US, it's a fraction of what you'd pay at home for the same standard of work — which is exactly why many people plan a trip around a project. If you've been quoted 2,000,000 IDR for a "full sleeve" on a tourist strip, it should worry you, because nobody can produce 60+ hours of quality work for that.

Small and Fine Line Work
The 1,500,000 IDR minimum applies here too, including fine line and mini tattoos. People sometimes expect a tiny piece to cost proportionally tiny — but the floor isn't about size, it's about what a session costs to run properly: sterile single-use setup, design time, the artist's booked time.
A small piece is often the smartest first tattoo precisely because it fits one sitting and heals fast. It just isn't a bargain-bin product.
Covering an Old Tattoo Usually Costs More
If you're covering existing work, we'll almost always recommend lightening it with a laser first. It's the part people don't budget for, and skipping it is more expensive than doing it.
Without lightening, the new design has to be significantly larger and darker to hide what's underneath — which means more hours, less freedom in the design, and a result shaped by the old tattoo rather than by your idea. In some cases we can hide the old piece inside the darker areas of a new design, but that's a constraint, not a plan.
Laser sessions start from 500,000 IDR for a piece up to 3×3 cm, 800,000 IDR for 5×5 cm, rising to 4,800,000 IDR for A4 size, with package discounts up to 30% — and regular clients get discounts on laser sessions. Why "Cheap in Bali" Is the Wrong Frame
Bali genuinely is more affordable than most Western markets for equivalent work. That's a real advantage, and it's why the island has become a serious destination rather than just a souvenir stop.
But affordability compared to Sydney is not the same as cheap in absolute terms, and the studios competing purely on price are not competing on the things that decide how your tattoo looks in five years — healed-work quality, sterile single-use setup, design time, and an artist who will tell you when an idea won't age well.
The cost that never shows up in a quote is the cover-up or the removal. Laser removal of a tattoo you regret costs real money and real months, and it's the most expensive way to save on the original.
