Black & Grey Realism — Bali

Black & grey realism tattoos in Bali

Specialist studio for black-and-grey realism in Uluwatu, Bali. Portraits, wildlife, nature and abstract — large-scale and precise. No colour needed when the shading does everything.

When shadow does all the work.

Black-and-grey realism is the most technically demanding style in tattooing. It relies entirely on the artist's ability to build gradients, manage contrast and reproduce fine detail without the crutch of colour. When done properly, the result is a piece that reads like a photograph on skin — and ages far better than colour work in Bali's tropical climate.

Artem — the studio's founder — is the resident black-and-grey realism specialist. He works from high-resolution references and spends as much time on the stencil and composition as on the tattoo itself. Large-scale back pieces and sleeves are his preference — the style truly shines when given room to breathe.

Black-and-grey realism is a tattooing style that uses only black ink — diluted to various grey tones — to recreate photographic depth and texture. It is used for portraits, wildlife, landscapes, and abstract dark imagery. It requires precise needle control and an academic understanding of light and shadow.
It depends on the size and complexity. A medium portrait (A4 placement) typically takes one full day (6–8 hours). A back piece is usually split into three to five sessions of 6–8 hours each. We never rush — session length is determined by quality, not the clock.
Yes. UV exposure and heat accelerate colour fade in tropical climates. Black-and-grey work — especially with quality ink and proper aftercare — retains contrast significantly longer. We recommend SPF50 on any healed tattoo exposed to direct Bali sun.
Pricing is based on session time. A half-day session (3–4 hours) starts from 1,500,000 IDR. Full-day sessions for large-scale realism start from 2,500,000 IDR. Multi-session back or sleeve projects are quoted individually after a consultation. Contact us via WhatsApp to get an estimate for your specific idea.
