Realism Tattoo — Bali

Photorealistic tattoos in Bali

Black-and-grey realism at the level where people ask if it’s a photograph. Portraits, animals, botanical and abstract compositions. Samadhi Uluwatu — open daily.

It either looks real or it doesn’t.

Realism tattooing is one of those styles where the gap between average and excellent is enormous — and completely visible. A portrait done badly looks nothing like the person. One done well stops people mid-conversation to look at your arm. The difference is in training, reference reading, and the ability to build gradients and contrast without any colour to hide behind.

Artem — Samadhi’s founder — has been working in black-and-grey realism for over twelve years. He works from high-resolution references, spends significant time on the stencil and composition, and takes on a limited number of large projects per month. His preference is large scale: full backs, sleeves, chest pieces, leg compositions. That’s where the style has room to breathe.

Realism tattooing aims to recreate photographic detail on skin — without the flat lines of traditional styles. It relies on shading, gradient building, and careful contrast management to create depth and texture. In black-and-grey realism, everything is done with one ink (black) diluted to different concentrations. The technique takes years to develop and is unforgiving of inconsistent pressure or poor needle control.
Size matters most. A detailed A4 portrait typically takes one full session. Large-scale compositions — half-backs, full backs, sleeves — typically require 7–12 sessions depending on detail level and complexity. We don’t compress sessions to fit a schedule — the quality matters more than the timeline.
For Bali specifically — yes, we think so. UV exposure accelerates colour fading significantly in a tropical climate. Black-and-grey work, especially with quality ink and proper aftercare, holds contrast far longer in sun-heavy environments. That’s one reason we focused on it. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in Bali, black-and-grey is the more practical choice for longevity.
Session-based pricing, starting from 1,500,000 IDR. Multi-session projects for backs and sleeves are quoted per project after a consultation. Contact us via WhatsApp with your idea for an accurate estimate.
Artem is the studio’s founder and the specialist for large-scale realism work. He has been tattooing for 12+ years with a focus on black-and-grey photorealism. He also created the Real Tattoo Memories project — a series documenting tattoos at extraordinary locations: active volcanoes, ocean depths, mountain peaks. Each large piece he creates is named individually, like a painting.
