If you're pricing a full back, a leg or a full sleeve in black and grey realism with a top artist in the US, you already know the number gets serious fast. Large realism isn't priced by the piece — it's priced by the hour, and a project this size runs to dozens of hours.
This article does the comparison honestly: what those hours cost with an elite artist at home, what they cost with our top artist in Bali, and how to fit the whole project into one two-week trip.
How Much Do Back Tattoos Cost in the US?
US pricing guides for 2026 put experienced senior artists at roughly $250–400 per hour, and the most sought-after artists at $400 per hour and above — with a 20–30% premium in cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and a 15–20% tip on top of the bill.
At that level, a single full day with a top realism artist commonly lands in the $2,500–3,200 range before the tip. A full back or a leg is not one day. It's many.
How Much Does a Full Back Tattoo Cost in Bali?
At Samadhi we charge by the hour:
- Our top artist — 2,500,000 IDR per hour (~$140)
- Resident artist — 1,500,000 IDR per hour (~$85)
- Elite US realism artist — $400+ per hour (plus tip)
USD at the October 2026 exchange rate; the rate moves, the IDR price doesn't.
That's roughly a third of the hourly price of a top US artist — for photorealistic black and grey work by an artist working at that level. On a project that takes dozens of hours, the gap is measured in thousands of dollars, which is why so many collectors fly in for their largest piece.
We don't quote a total for a back or a leg before seeing the idea, because the number of hours depends entirely on the design: how much detail, how much of the skin is covered, how much black and grey gradient it needs. Send us your idea and placement and we'll give you an estimate. More on how we price: Tattoo prices in Bali.
Sleeve Tattoo Cost: The Same Math
A full sleeve follows the same logic. It's the most common large project people bring to Bali, and it's usually completed in 7–10 full days of work, depending on the complexity of the design. At US top-artist rates those days add up quickly; here they're billed at the hourly rate above. See sleeve tattoos in Bali.
A Full Back or Leg in Two Weeks
The reason this works as a trip and not just a price difference: a large project can be finished in about two weeks of focused work.
We usually work three days on, three days off — three consecutive sessions, then three rest days for the skin to recover. On that rhythm, or with denser scheduling when your skin and the design allow it, a back, a leg or a sleeve is realistically achievable in one visit instead of a year of appointments at home.
A typical two weeks looks like this:
- Before you fly — online consultation: references, placement, size. The composition is designed in full before the first session. (How the large-project consultation works)
- Day 1 — arrival, rest, final look at the design in the studio.
- Days 2–4 — first block of sessions.
- Days 5–7 — rest: shade, air conditioning, no sea. Bali is still Bali.
- Days 8–10 — second block.
- Days 11–14 — finishing details, then healing.

Getting a Tattoo in Bali From the US
There's no nonstop flight from the US to Bali (DPS): expect one connection and roughly a day of travel, depending on your departure city. That's why a large project is the trip that makes sense — you're not flying across the Pacific for a small piece, you're flying for the tattoo you'd otherwise spend a year and a much bigger budget on at home.
The studio is in Uluwatu, on the Bukit Peninsula — cliffs, surf breaks and quiet villas, and a calmer base for a two-week project than the busy tourist strips. It's a private studio built for long custom sessions, not walk-in flash.
Black and Grey Realism at This Scale
Full backs and legs are where black and grey realism shows what it can do: one continuous composition, soft gradients, portraits and textures that hold together from three metres away and up close. If that's what you're after, look through our realism and black and grey work, and read how a back piece is built session by session.
