Ubud is where Bali slows down — rice terraces, yoga shalas, wellness retreats, long-stay visitors settling in for weeks or months at a time. It's inland, quiet, and built around a completely different rhythm than the beach clubs of the south. That rhythm is wonderful for a retreat. It's also why Ubud has never really developed a serious tattoo scene — the artists doing custom, specialist work tend to be where the surf and the coastline are, on the Bukit Peninsula in Uluwatu.
This is an honest look at what it actually takes to get from Ubud to Uluwatu for a tattoo, and why so many Ubud-based visitors make the trip anyway.
The Ubud Situation
Ubud has plenty of small tattoo shops scattered along its art-market streets — mostly aimed at short, simple pieces for people already there for yoga or a retreat, not multi-session custom work. That's a fair reflection of what the town is built for: wellness, art, quiet. Specialist tattoo studios — the kind built around black-and-grey realism, fine line, or large-scale projects — are concentrated on the coast instead.
So if you're staying in Ubud for a retreat, a course, or a longer remote-work stint and want something more than a small souvenir piece, it's worth knowing upfront: the studio you want is a real drive away, not a quick scooter ride.
The Honest Distance — This Is a Real Drive
Here's the part worth being straight about: Ubud to Uluwatu isn't a quick hop like the drive from Kuta or Seminyak. It's roughly 52 km, and in perfect, empty-road conditions that's about an hour. In practice, with real Bali traffic — funnelling through Denpasar and the Kuta/Jimbaran corridor — plan on two to two and a half hours each way, more if you leave during peak times (roughly 7–9am or 4–6pm).
That's a real commitment, not a "why not, it's on the way" detour. Which is exactly why it's worth planning properly instead of treating it as an afterthought.
Why Make the Trip Anyway
Over the last decade, Uluwatu has become one of the most serious tattoo destinations on the island — custom black-and-grey realism, true fine line, large-scale multi-session projects, and professional laser removal, all concentrated in one specialist studio rather than spread thin across walk-in shops. It's the kind of work you'd normally fly home for.
For a lot of Ubud visitors — people already committing weeks or months to Bali for a retreat, a course, or remote work — one considered trip south is a small piece of a much longer stay, not a rushed errand squeezed between yoga classes.
Ubud vs Uluwatu — An Honest Comparison
Ubud is Bali's wellness and culture center — rice terraces, yoga, art markets, a slower pace. Its tattoo scene reflects that: small, casual, aimed at simple pieces rather than specialist work.
Uluwatu is a clifftop surf-and-art coast on the far side of the island, built around specialist studios — custom realism, fine line, large-scale projects, and dedicated laser removal.
There's no need to choose one for the whole trip. Stay in Ubud for the retreat, the terraces, the pace you came for — and make the longer drive south specifically for the tattoo, planned as its own day.
What the Drive Actually Gets You

Given how far Ubud sits from the specialist studios, it makes sense to pair any of this with a full day out rather than squeeze it in.
Making a Day of It
Two to two and a half hours each way means this isn't a there-and-back-in-an-hour trip. A few things make it work:
- Send your idea first. Message reference images on WhatsApp before you set out, so the design is ready when you arrive and the drive isn't spent on planning that could've happened remotely.
- Leave early. Departing before 7am (or well after 9am) avoids the worst of the Denpasar traffic in both directions.
- Plan it as a full day, not an errand. Pair the session with a beach afternoon at Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban or the Uluwatu cliffs before the drive back — one trip covers both the tattoo and a proper look at the Bukit.
- For larger projects, consider staying over. If you're planning a sleeve, back piece or anything multi-session, one night near Uluwatu between sessions is far more realistic than two 2+ hour drives a day.
- Mind aftercare in the heat. Fresh ink and a long drive back through midday sun isn't ideal — keep it covered and out of direct light on the way home.
